Lt. Governor Parkinson aims to make government more efficient Since the start of her administration, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has pledged to cut wasteful spending, identify savings and make Kansas government more efficient. The governor’s Budget Efficiency Savings Team (BEST) has helped to eliminate more than $1 billion in government waste. To expand these BEST efforts, Lieutenant Governor Mark Parkinson will lead BEST II, continuing to make Kansas government do more with less. “By cutting waste and making better decisions, we’ve been able to provide strategic tax cuts, invest in schools and prepare our workforce to compete in a global market,” said Parkinson. “We’re going to continue those efforts, while also looking for new and more effective ways to serve Kansans.” Parkinson encourages Kansans to visit the BEST II website to learn more about past and ongoing successes and share their ideas for future savings. During the first round of BEST, Kansas renegotiated lower prices on state purchasing contracts, reduced subscriptions, and eliminated the state motor pool. New efforts are underway to make state buildings more energy efficient, increase cooperation for purchasing between state and local units of government, and consolidate multiple vendor maintenance contracts into a comprehensive program which will eliminate cost and inefficiencies of contracts. “As a state, under the leadership of Governor Sebelius, we have changed our approach and priorities to spending,” said Parkinson. “I look forward to continuing these efforts over the next several years.” “Governor Sebelius and I encourage you to submit your ideas on the website, or call us toll-free at 1-877-KS-WORKS,” said Parkinson. “Together we can work to create a state that is more efficient, building a positive economic future for our children.” Information on BEST II is now available at: www.savemoney.ks.gov. # # # |
