Sebelius announces grants for Kansas mentoring programs Governor Kathleen Sebelius has awarded nearly $585,000 in grants to local community mentoring programs. “Mentoring programs play critical roles in young people’s lives and I’m happy these funds will be put to good use,” Sebelius said. The grants awarded will support programs that work to prevent violence in and around schools; prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs; and involve parents and communities. The programs also coordinate with related federal, state, school and community efforts and resources to foster a safe and drug-free learning environment encouraging student academic achievement. Governor Sebelius and Coach Bill Snyder lead Kansas Mentors a statewide initiative to provide all Kansas youth access to quality mentoring. Kansas Mentors help to bring supportive and caring adults who share our values into the lives of all our children “Because of the Governor’s support for these programs, more Kansas children will have access to mentoring opportunities,” Snyder said. Grant funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Education through the Governor’s discretionary portion of the Federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA) grant program.
