Sebelius appoints members to
the Coordinating Council on Early Childhood Development Services

Preparing children to learn by the time they enter kindergarten is the shared goal of several state agencies, businesses, and education groups. To help streamline and coordinate these efforts, Governor Kathleen Sebelius appointed two new members to the Coordinating Council on Early Childhood Development Services and reappointed three members.

“Children are more likely to succeed in school – and in life – when they start kindergarten ready to learn,” Sebelius said. “Unfortunately, Kansas is behind the national average in preparing our kids for their first year of school, putting Kansas children at a significant disadvantage. This group helps identify the obstacles and opportunities we face in providing a strong start for every Kansas child.”

The Coordinating Council on Early Childhood Development Services advises and assists state agencies that provide and administer programs for infants and toddlers, including the State Board of Education, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, SRS and the Children’s Cabinet.

Dr. Leticia Holub Taylor, Overland Park, is a mental health facilitator and psychologist for the Lawrence Public Schools.

Kate Wolff, Lawrence, is a governmental affairs coordinator within the Sebelius administration and will serve the council at the pleasure of the governor.

Dr. Lind Mitchell was appointed as a member of the council in 2005 and has been appointed to serve as chairperson.

Also reappointed were Richard Martinez, Wichita; Tom Laing, Topeka; and Tom Kohmetscher, Wellington.

Members of the Coordinating Council on Early Childhood Development serve four-year terms unless noted otherwise.
