Sebelius appoints youth to juvenile justice advisory group Governor Kathleen Sebelius has appointed William Cheek as a youth member to the Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. “The advisory group helps to promote the best interests of youth in Kansas by working to prevent juvenile delinquency and strengthen families and communities,” Sebelius said. “Youth members bring an important perspective to the process.” Cheek, Topeka, is a senior at Washburn Rural High School. This past summer, Cheek was appointed crew captain in the Kansas Youth Conservation Corps (KYCC). The KYCC provides at-risk 18 to 22 year-olds with vocational skills while introducing them to positive role models. Crews completed service projects this past summer at the 11,000-acre Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and at locations throughout Shawnee County The Kansas Advisory Group on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention was established to determine, advocate for, and promote the best interest of juveniles in Kansas. The group reviews juvenile policy and advices policymakers on issues affecting the juvenile justice system and youth related issues. The group also participates in the development and review of the state juvenile justice plan and makes recommendations on all juvenile justice grant applications. Each year more than $7 million is provided to local communities for prevention and early intervention programs. # # # |
