Sebelius names Sara Welch Johnson Co. District Court Judge

Citing her range of experience in matters of the law, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has named Sara Welch, Olathe, as a District Court Judge of Johnson County.

“Sara has a comprehensive understanding of our justice system,” Sebelius said. “Having worked in law enforcement and as a public and private litigator – her experience has prepared her to serve the people of Johnson County as a knowledgeable, fair and just representative of the law.”

Welch has nearly two decades of litigation experience having tried a number of different types of cases throughout her legal career, including capital murder, methamphetamine manufacturing, numerous felony drug charges and others. Her experience has given Welch a thorough understanding of the rules of evidence as well as a true understanding of issues attorneys deal with as courtroom advocates.

Welch earned a degree in criminal justice and corrections from Washburn University in 1977 and began an eight year career as a law enforcement officer. During that time, Welch served as Deputy Sheriff in Johnson County and later as a police officer for the City of Leawood.

In 1988, Welch earned her law degree from the University of Colorado, graduating 4th in her class. After graduation, Welch returned to Kansas to work as the Assistant District Attorney in Johnson County, where she served as Senior Trial Attorney from 2000 until 2006.

Currently, Welch is in private practice engaged in criminal defense, family and juvenile law.

This is a newly created district court judge position.
