Drought plagues Virginia; Kansas lends a hand
Kansas roadways open up to drought relief

The considerable amount of rain which has fallen throughout many parts of Kansas this summer has been devastatingly absent in other areas of the country.

A significant drought has placed the Commonwealth of Virginia on the brink of an agricultural crisis.  To aid ranchers there, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has signed an executive order allowing for speedier exportation of hay and feed.

“As Kansans, we know what it’s like to face bad weather,” said Sebelius. “And we know how important it is, in times like these, to have a good neighbor who’s ready and willing to lend a hand.  We may not be next door neighbors, but we want to do what we can to help the people of Virginia.”

Executive Order 07-23 suspends enforcement of restrictions on overweight and oversized vehicles, as well as the limits for licensing/operating and authority/registration as required by the Kansas Corporation Commission.

These suspensions apply only to vehicles participating in the effort to deliver relief to Virginia. A similar order was signed by the governor in May of this year to expedite recovery efforts in Greensburg, and in September of 2005 to assist with relief efforts associated with Hurricane Katrina.

This temporary order is in effect for thirty days unless rescinded earlier or lengthened by executive order.
