Sebelius announces $3M in grants to local public safety
efforts
Federal funds to assist 57 agencies in communities around Kansas
Fifty-seven agencies working to promote the safety of Kansans will receive a total
of $3 million in support thanks to grants announced today by Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
The grants are made possible by federal funding and were announced by the Governor
on behalf of the Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
“Kansans deserve safe neighborhoods and communities, and these resources will
help local efforts to promote public safety. These funds will go to everything
from providing equipment for law enforcement officers to supporting victims’ assistance
and crime prevention projects,” said Sebelius.
In prior years, grant funds were successfully used by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation
for the Southeast Kansas Drug Task Force. This year the Kansas Legislature committed
state resources to continue that work, and as a result the KBI will be able to use grant
funds to develop a task force in Southwest Kansas.
“Illegal drugs, particularly meth, remain a statewide problem, so creating a
drug task force in Southwest Kansas will expand the fight and help local law enforcement
go after drug traffickers and producers in the region,” said Sebelius.
Sebelius also announced the Kansas Department of Corrections is receiving $84,799 to
continue its program to provide drug treatment to inmates. This is part of the
Federal Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners Grant Program.
The Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program helps state
and local governments prevent and control crime based. Funds are distributed
based on communities’ needs and conditions and are provided by the U.S. Department
of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.
The Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council awarded $2,917,698 to 60 projects
being conducted by 57 agencies using funding from the JAG grant program. A list
