Sebelius appoints Marquardt to Washburn Board of Regents

To help guide the institution as it prepares students for the workforce, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has appointed Christel Marquardt to a four-year term on the Washburn University Board of Regents.

“Washburn is a critical part of our state’s post-secondary education network.  While it is a municipal university, its reach and positive impact extend far beyond Topeka and Shawnee County.  Continuing to enhance the education available at Washburn will not only benefit local students, but our entire state,” said Sebelius.

Washburn University is governed by a nine member Board of Regents, three of which are appointed by the governor.  Three residents of the city, one from each of the state senatorial districts, are appointed by the mayor of the City of Topeka. The Shawnee County Commission appoints one member, who must be a resident of Shawnee County but not of the city, while the Kansas Board of Regents annually selects one of its members to serve on the Washburn board.

Marquardt, Topeka, is a judge on the Kansas Court of Appeals, having been appointed in 1995.  Prior to that she was an attorney in private practice since graduating with honors from the Washburn School of Law in 1974

A published expert in her field, Marquardt has written articles for the American Bar Association Judges Journal, the American Bar Association Journal, Kansas Municipal Law Annual and the Washburn Law Journal.

Marquardt is a current member of the Kansas Sentencing Commission.  She’s also the recipient of the Washburn University Distinguished Service Award in 2004 and the Washburn University School of Law Distinguished Service Award in 2002.

Marquardt is a member of the American Business Women’s Association, has held several posts on community boards and commissions and has served for nearly twenty years on the Topeka Symphony Board of Directors over the course of two periods of service.
