Governor directs flags to be lowered to honor fallen officers In commemoration of the Kansas Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony on Friday, May 18, and National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, which is today, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has ordered flags on state buildings be flown at half-staff on each of those days. “We tragically lost two Kansas law enforcement officers in the line of duty since the ceremony last year at this time,” said Sebelius. “Sheridan County Sheriff James Johnson was killed in October while interviewing a suspect, while Officer Robert “Tim” Buckman of Macksville was fatally injured as he warned residents of the storms that devastated parts of Southwest Kansas earlier this month. They both gave their lives while protecting others and we honor them for their dedication and sacrifice,” she continued. On May 18, the Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial Service will begin at noon in the 2nd floor Rotunda of the Statehouse to honor law enforcement officers who died while protecting Kansans. H.J. Res. 730, P.L. 87-726 designates May 15 of each year as National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day. # # # |
