Sebelius highlights Innovation America Week in Kansas As part of a an effort to strengthen the economic competitiveness of the United States by improving our capacity for innovation, Governor Kathleen Sebelius today joined governors across the country in proclaiming May 14-18 as Innovation America Week. “We’ve worked here in Kansas to spur innovation through tax relief that encourages investment in new technology, and through collaboration that is designed to bring innovative new companies to Kansas,” Sebelius said. Based on the year-long Innovation America initiative championed by Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, chair of the National Governors Association, governors across the nation are emphasizing their commitment to ensuring a better America for the next generation. Sebelius serves on NGA’s Innovation America task force. Sebelius pointed out that education, particularly in math and science, is key to innovation. “This year we added support for the Kansas Academy for Math and Science, which allows high school juniors and seniors to take part in a two-year program of college-level coursework. Through efforts such as this, we are ensuring that Kansas schools are preparing students to succeed in the global marketplace,” Sebelius said. As part of Innovation America, governors are focusing on the importance of providing a quality math and science education, helping colleges and universities better prepare the workers of tomorrow and promoting investment in the businesses and technologies of the future. This national initiative is designed to help governors enact effective, statewide solutions which enhance the economic capacity of their state and the nation. “The United States’ ability to compete in this new knowledge-based world economy will depend on its ability to adapt,” said Napolitano. “The Innovation America initiative will help governors create innovative programs and achieve tangible results.” Earlier this year, Governor Sebelius joined other governors from around the country for the 2007 NGA Winter Meeting. At this summit, governors discussed Innovation America and focused on expanding science, technology, engineering and math education to spur regional economic growth.
