State to sell vehicles to Greensburg for $1 each

Many vehicles owned by public agencies in Greensburg were destroyed by the tornado.  To replace these vehicles, Kansas Surplus Property has sold 21 cars, trucks, and vans to the City of Greensburg for $1 each.  The vehicles sold included 11 utility and 4x4 pickup trucks, 5 passenger and cargo vans, and 5 passenger cars.  All vehicles were high mileage vehicles turned into state surplus by agencies who replaced them with new purchases.

“We will continue looking for ways we can help the people of Greensburg recover and rebuild,” said Governor Kathleen Sebelius. “This will help Kiowa County law enforcement and city officials better serve the people of their community.”

I-70 Auto Auction, who frequently handles the sale of surplus vehicles for the state, volunteered to transport the vehicles to Haviland today.  The private company graciously agreed to waive its normal $125/vehicle fee for all 21 vehicles.  Department of Revenue agents in Haviland had tags and registrations ready for the vehicles when they arrived so they could immediately be placed into service.

The agencies receiving $1 surplus vehicles are: Kiowa County Sheriff (5 vehicles); Kiowa County Road & Bridge (6 vehicles); Kiowa County Health Department (1 vehicle); Kiowa County Emergency Management Service (1 vehicle); Greensburg City Utility Department (7 vehicles); Greensburg City Manager (1 vehicle).
