Sebelius names Cisneros to lead Kansas
Citing his experience in public service at the local and federal levels, as well as his work conducting community outreach, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has appointed Steve A. Cisneros to serve as executive director of the Kansas Hispanic & Latino American Affairs Commission. “All Kansans have a stake in their government and should have a voice here in Topeka. We want to ensure every Kansan has an opportunity to achieve his or her full potential, and Steve will help make that happen. We are delighted to bring a talented native son back to Kansas to work on this important effort.” Sebelius said. The Kansas Hispanic & Latino American Affairs Commission promotes the advancement of Hispanics in all aspects of Kansas life, including education, the economy and public service, according to guidelines set by the Legislature. Cisneros is a graduate of Wichita State University where he majored in political science and minored in economics. He first entered public service in 1994, serving as the private sector coordinator for the White House Conference on Small Business. In 1997, he joined the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a special assistant to the director of congressional affairs before going to work for the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve as special assistant to the secretary of the Department of Transportation in 1999. From 2001 to 2003, Cisneros served as director for Jefferson Government Relations, before going on to work on legislative issues for the county commission of Broward County, Florida, and later on community outreach for the county appraiser Cisneros starts May 1, and he succeeds Elias Garcia who has been named the diversity coordinator for the Kansas Department of Corrections.
