Kansas to join nation in mourning for Virginia Tech victims Governor Kathleen Sebelius today issued the following statement regarding tomorrow’s day of mourning: “As the nation comes together to mourn, Kansans offer our thoughts and prayers for the families and friends of the victims, and hope they will find comfort during these difficult times. We also hope for the process of healing to begin and send our wishes for a full recovery to those recovering from their physical, mental and spiritual wounds. “Tomorrow will be a day of mourning and remembrance, and I ask that bells across Kansas ring at 11:00 a.m. as a sign of national unity. “In addition, I urge Kansans to join together, providing comfort and exercising patience as we deal with heightened security concerns that may arise here at home.” The ringing of bells comes at the request of Virginia Governor Tim Kaine in a letter addressed to America’s governors. The text of that letter is below. Governor Kaine is a native Kansan, and his parents still live in Overland Park. April 18, 2007 Dear Governors: On behalf of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest thanks for your prayers and well wishes during these difficult days. Indeed, the entire country and many around the world felt the massive shock that fell upon Virginia Tech and the community of Blacksburg. It is quite clear that April 16, 2007 will be remembered in the hearts and minds of Virginians and all Americans for the rest of their lives. As our Commonwealth begins the long and difficult healing process resulting from this senseless act of violence, I am filled with images of a Virginia Tech community that is resilient and unified. I am also inspired by the outpouring of support expressed by my fellow Governors across the nation. I invite you to join with me in standing with those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy and those who are recovering from physical and psychological wounds. I also invite you to join me in thanking those in our public safety, medical, and education professions who performed their missions bravely. On Friday, April 20, 2007 the Commonwealth will declare a state-wide Day of Mourning. This occasion will be highlighted by a bell ringing ceremony at noon in honor of the victims claimed on that dreadful day. As this tragedy impacts not just Virginia, I encourage you to consider standing with Virginia by ringing bells across your state at noon eastern daylight savings time on April 20, 2007. It is clear that difficult days lie ahead as we all embrace the grieving process that is sure to come. Again, I thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask that you continue to keep Virginia Tech in your hearts and minds as we all work together to overcome this horrific tragedy. Sincerely, Timothy M. Kaine # # # |
