Governor Kathleen Sebelius comments on the recent tragedy in Virginia, “The thoughts and prayers of all Kansans go out to the victims in Virginia and their families. We pray for the families, friends and community, and hope for the recovery of those still fighting for their lives. “This horrific crime shocks the conscience and raises the question of whether such an event could happen here in Kansas. Our universities have already said they intend to learn from this tragedy by reviewing current security procedures and determining where improvements can be made. At the state level, we formed a commission earlier this year to study ways to improve safety in K-12 schools. I’m making the expertise of this group and our homeland security officials available to our colleges and universities as they work to ensure a safe learning environment for students, faculty and staff alike. Attorney General Paul Morrison has also offered his assistance with these on-going efforts. “This tragedy reminds us we must be vigilant in our surroundings, whether at school, at work or in our communities. I encourage all Kansans to talk with their neighbors, family and friends about how best to stay safe and prepared. Local law enforcement is essential in planning and preparedness and I thank them for all their efforts to protect our communities.” Governor Kathleen Sebelius has directed all flags to be flown at half-staff through sunset, Sunday, April 22. The Governor’s directive is in keeping with President George Bush’s order that all U.S. flags at federal locations be flown at half-staff through the rest of the week. # # # |
