Governor encouraged by latest signs of economic growth The following is a statement by Governor Kathleen Sebelius regarding the 2007 consensus revenue estimates: “These estimates show our economic growth is continuing and that it’s leading to higher incomes for both families and businesses. That’s great news and it shows our strategy of encouraging businesses to create jobs in Kansas is working. This growth should only continue thanks to the commitments we’ve made to quality education and the business incentives we’ve created. Overall revenue is expected to grow next year, as well as the following year before one factors in the Legislature’s actions this year to set aside money for schools and reduce taxes. While this news is very encouraging, there are still several key issues yet to be addressed by the Legislature, such as the health care crisis and expansion of early childhood education to more Kansas children. I urge legislators to act responsibly by focusing on these priorities, rather than any new spending projects or additional tax cuts. This new revenue gives us an opportunity to build a solid foundation for continued prosperity, and we must not squander this chance.” # # # |
