Governor signs bill to ensure proper
insurance for tribal law enforcement officers

To protect tribal law enforcement organizations and officers, Governor Kathleen Sebelius today signed a bill requiring insurance carriers providing liability insurance coverage to tribal law enforcement officers to certify with the Attorney General that the tribal officers have the appropriate insurance coverage.

The bill, SB 13, also requires the insurance carrier to notify the Attorney General if the insurance coverage is terminated or no longer complies with the insurance requirements. Finally, it requires the insurance policy to be at least $2,000,000 in aggregate loss limit.  The bill will take effect after its publication in the statute book.

Governor Sebelius also signed three additional bills into law, bringing the total number of bills signed during the 2007 Legislative Session to 12.

Updating lists of eligible jurors

SB 51 requires the State Registrar of the Department of Health and Environment to furnish the clerk of the district court of each county, without charge, a list of deceased residents of the county who were at least 18 years of age and for whom death certificates have been filed. District court clerks will be authorized to use this information to update or correct juror records and will not be allowed to disseminate the information to the public.

Restrictions on release of judgment of record

SB 53 makes it so only a district court judge can release a judgment of record after it has been dormant for at least two years.  Current law allows a district court clerk to release a judgment of record after that time.  This bill shifts that responsibility to a district court judge.

Eliminating requirement for notification of new/eliminated judge and magistrate positions

SB 57 repeals the statutory requirement that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court annually report to the chairpersons of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees all district magistrate positions created or eliminated and all new district judge positions created.
