Sebelius appoints McEwen to 27th District judgeship
Randall McEwen will fill bench until 2008 elections

Citing his legal experience and community involvement, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has appointed Randall H. McEwen to serve as district magistrate in the 27th Judicial District, which covers Reno County.

“Randy has strong ties to the community and a strong commitment to ensuring justice for all.  He also has a great deal of experience in a variety of settings, including public service and as an attorney in private practice,” Sebelius said.

A graduate of Elkhart High School, McEwen earned bachelor’s degrees in political science and American studies from the University of Kansas before going on to earn his Juris Doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1976.

Upon graduation, McEwen worked for Legal Services for Prisoners, Inc., providing representation for those in Kansas Department of Corrections system.  In the early 1980s, McEwen served as an attorney for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services and also formed a law partnership, Arnhold & McEwen Law Offices.  Since 1989, McEwen has worked in private practice in the Hutchinson area.

Active in his community, McEwen has served as president of the board of directors for Big Brothers of Reno County and on the site council for Obee Elementary School, as well as being active in scouting as an adult volunteer and Eagle Scout.

McEwen and wife, Kamela, have two sons, Joshua, 20, and Jacob, 18. They are foster parents to Jessica, 16, and Ashlynn, 21 months.

McEwen will complete the two-year, unexpired term of the Honorable Joseph McCarville who was recently sworn in as a district judge for the 27th District. An elected position, this seat will be on the 2008 ballot.
