Sebelius opens roads to Iowa relief efforts
Governor signs executive order to help winter storm recovery

Iowa recently experienced severe winter storms which caused widespread electrical outages as a result of destruction to electrical equipment and transmission lines.   Iowa Governor Chet Culver has requested assistance from neighboring states in restoring power.

To ensure crews and equipment can travel quickly through Kansas, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has signed an executive order designed to speed recovery efforts by temporarily waiving certain restrictions on vehicle size and weight.

“Kansans understand what it’s like to experience severe weather, and we want to make sure our neighbors in Iowa are able to recover quickly from the recent storms,” Sebelius said.

Executive Order 07-03 temporarily allows overweight and oversized vehicles involved in relief efforts to travel on Kansas roadways, and waives certain interstate license regulations for their drivers.

This storm hit while Governors Sebelius and Culver were meeting with colleagues over the weekend at the National Governors Association in Washington DC. Governor Sebelius assisted Governor Culver by putting his emergency management staff in touch with Kansas’ staff to share information and propose helpful steps to assist Iowa with their response and recovery.
