Governor proclaims “Entrepreneurship Week in Kansas”

According to the Department of Labor, most new jobs created throughout the United States in the past decade have come from the creative efforts of entrepreneurs and small businesses. To bring focus to these efforts, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has proclaimed February 24th —March 3rd, 2007, as ‘Entrepreneurship Week in Kansas’.

“Entrepreneurship is vital to Kansas’ growth and prosperity” Sebelius said. “Entrepreneurs provide better opportunities for businesses to operate and create the jobs and resources they need to advance their business dream.”

Nearly 70 percent of young Americans report wanting to become entrepreneurs, and gaining entrepreneurial skills will assist students in future business pursuits. The high interest of students in becoming entrepreneurs, and the important role entrepreneurs have played in advancing the national and local economies, makes it critical that Kansas schools provide students with the training and skills needed to become the entrepreneurs of the future.

The Proclamation for Entrepreneurship Week in Kansas was requested by the Youth Entrepreneurs of Kansas out of Wichita. Entrepreneurship Week USA is sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation and supported by the National Governor’s Association. Entrepreneurship Week USA provides an opportunity to focus on the innovative ways in which entrepreneurship education can bring together the core academic, technical, and problem solving skills essential for future entrepreneurs and successful workers in future workplaces.

To help celebrate Entrepreneurship Week, a partnership of the state’s leading economic development organizations will host a Kansas Entrepreneurship Breakfast for Legislators on Tuesday, February 27 from 7:30 – 9 a.m. in the Second Floor Rotunda of the Capitol.  The partners include the Kansas Bioscience Authority, Kansas Department of Commerce, Kansas Small Business Development Center, Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC), KTEC PIPELINE and NetWork Kansas.
