Governor appoints Segarra to serve 8th Judicial District
Judgeship serves Dickinson, Geary, Marion, and Morris counties

Citing her experience as a public defender and magistrate judge, Governor Kathleen Sebelius has appointed Maritza Segarra to serve the counties of Dickinson, Geary, Marion and Morris as a district court judge in the 8th Judicial District.

“Judge Segarra has nearly two decades worth of experience in the courtroom, both at trial and on the bench,” said Sebelius. “Her extensive work with children and families as well as her commitment to community service only increase her qualifications for this position. I’m honored to name Maritza as our state’s first Latina district judge.”

Segarra, Junction City, began practicing law in 1988 as an assistant public defender for the North Central Region, which covers the 8th and 21st judicial districts of Kansas. She became deputy public defender for the region in 1990 and chief public defender in 1997.   Currently, she is a district magistrate judge in the 8th Judicial District, having served in that position since 2004.

Segarra is a member of the Geary County Bar Association, Kansas District Magistrate Judges Association, National Judges Association and the Junction City Chamber of Commerce.  She also served on the Kansas Sentencing Commission from 1992 to 1995 and was part of Governor Bill Graves’ task force on racial profiling.

Segarra is active in her community, with past service on the boards of the local Habitat for Humanity and Geary County Hospital, and is often sought as a guest speaker.  She is also the first Latina appointed to a district court bench in state history.

Segarra received her law degree from Washburn University School of Law in 1988, after receiving her bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in 1984.

Segarra is married to Tim Fegan, and has a step-son, Christopher, who attends K-State.

Segarra replaces Judge Larry Bengston.
