Five Kansas fire departments awarded federal grants
Altamont, Cowley County, Hutchinson, Ottawa and Wabaunsee departments receive aid

Five more Kansas fire departments will receive assistance from the federal government, Governor Kathleen Sebelius said today.

“We’re all grateful for the firefighters and emergency personnel who keep Kansas communities safe each and every day, as well as for this federal support which will help them expand their capabilities,” said Sebelius.

The Altamont Fire Department in Labette County will receive $62,501; the Cowley County Fire Department will receive $246,713; the Hutchinson Fire Department in Reno County will receive $52,169; the Ottawa Fire Department in Franklin County will receive $195,700; and the Wabaunsee Fire Department in Wabaunsee County will receive $23,937.

These grants are administered by the Homeland Security Department’s Office for Domestic Preparedness in cooperation with the United States Fire Administration.

The grants going to Altamont, Hutchinson, Ottawa and Wabaunsee were awarded in the Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety category, which includes training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment and modifications to fire stations and facilities.

The grant for the Cowley County Fire Department was awarded in the Firefighting Vehicles Acquisition category which provides money earmarked for the purchase of firefighting vehicles, including pumpers, brush trucks, tankers/tenders, rescue vehicles, ambulances, aerials, foam units, and fireboats.

The Department of Homeland Security received more than 18,172 applications for the programs.  For more information about the grant program, visit http://www.firegrantsupport.com/afg/faq/06.
