“First Dude” to promote reading during visit to Topeka school
Kansas children, teachers, and parents participate in Scholastic Global Read-A-Thon

Kansas’ “First Dude” Gary Sebelius, husband of Governor Kathleen Sebelius and a federal magistrate judge, will again serve as the “Kansas Ambassador of Reading” as part of this year’s Scholastic Global Read-A-Thon.

The theme of this year’s event is “Read For 2007: Read For Life.”

On Friday, December 8, Judge Sebelius will lead a statewide celebration of reading and will encourage all children, parents, teachers, and librarians to read for 2,007 seconds – approximately 33 1/2 minutes – each day.

Judge Sebelius will read some of his favorite children’s books to the students at State Street Elementary School, 500 NE Sumner Street in Topeka. This is the fourth year Judge Sebelius has participated in this event.

Since its inception in 1999, the Scholastic initiative has brought together millions of children, parents, and teachers in each of the 50 states and throughout 37 countries to promote reading and literacy.
