Fire departments in Columbus, Eureka, and Udall awarded federal grants The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced another round of FY06 Assistance to Firefighters Grants. In Kansas, fire departments in Columbus, Eureka and Udall were among those selected nationwide. Columbus Fire Department will receive $47,500, Eureka Fire Department will receive $46,431 and the Udall Fire Department will receive $15,080. “I am pleased we have this money coming into Kansas to help communities,” said Governor Sebelius. “I commend the firefighters and emergency personnel who work to keep Kansas communities safe and the members of our Congressional delegation who worked to get the money to us to help them. These funds will be put to good use.” These grants are administered by the Homeland Security Department’s Office for Domestic Preparedness in cooperation with the United States Fire Administration. Each of these grants was awarded in the Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety category, which includes training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment and modifications to fire stations and facilities. The Department of Homeland Security received more than 18,172 applications for the program, selecting only those able to articulate the benefits to be derived from the grant funds.
