Four Kansas fire departments to receive federal support
Fire departments in Arkansas City, Claflin, El Dorado and Frontenac selected

Fire departments in Arkansas City, Claflin, El Dorado and Frontenac will receive assistance in recruiting and training firefighters, as well as the purchase of equipment, Governor Kathleen Sebelius announced today.

The four fire departments will receive a total of $125,465 in grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters program.

“We have an outstanding network of firefighters throughout our state.  This assistance will help them be even more prepared to respond to fires and other emergencies in their communities,” Sebelius said.

The Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department will receive $33,250 from the federal government, while the Claflin Fire Department will receive $17,290, the El Dorado Fire Department $29,925 and the Frontenac Fire Department $45,000.

The grants to Arkansas City, Claflin and El Dorado were awarded in the Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety category, which includes training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment and modifications to fire stations and facilities.

In Frontenac, the grant focuses on recruitment and is designed to improve staffing and deployment capabilities, thus assuring the community has adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.

The grants are provided by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Domestic Preparedness in cooperation with the United States Fire Administration.

The four fire departments were selected from amongst 18,172 agencies that submitted applications to the federal government.  For more information about the grant program, visit http://www.firegrantsupport.com/afg/faq/06.
