Kansas Governor expresses shock in response to Indiana tragedy
Sebelius wants review of parole process

Governor Kathleen Sebelius issued the following statement today:

“I was shocked and anguished to hear the tragic news from Indiana, and I was deeply troubled to learn that the individual accused of the crime had been paroled in Kansas.  The Parole Board operates independently, based on a process set in statute and in its own rules and regulations.  Based on what I’ve learned about this case, I believe it is time for a thorough review of the Parole Board’s process.  Kansans need to know what criteria they use, what information they consider, and how they make decisions.  I’m going to meet with my staff at the earliest possible opportunity to discuss how to proceed with this review.  If there is a way to improve the process, we should do it, so Kansans will have confidence that something like this will never happen again.”
