Wireless Internet now available in the “people’s library,” Governor says
Kansas State Library is the first authorized wireless installation in Kansas and one of the first wireless state libraries in the nation

In a continuing effort to deliver quality service to Kansans, the Kansas State Library is now providing wireless Internet access for patrons, Governor Kathleen Sebelius announced today.

“Libraries are important in our efforts to promote lifelong learning and a well-educated workforce. The Internet plays a growing role in learning, so it is only natural to expand access to the Internet in our libraries. Providing wireless Internet access in the State Library, which belongs to the people of Kansas, simply makes sense,” Governor Sebelius said.

Through the partnership of the Kansas State Library and Division of Information Systems and Communications (DISC), this was the State of Kansas’ first authorized wireless installation. In addition, the Library is one of the first state libraries in the nation to provide wireless Internet access for its patrons.

As the only library in Topeka to offer wireless Internet capabilities to the public, this service will allow statehouse visitors, state employees and legislators to use it to check their e-mail or conduct research on the web.

“Providing wireless Internet access is a service I knew I wanted to provide to our customers when I became State Librarian in February, and in April we began taking the steps to make this happen,” Christie Brandau said. “State providers should be able to offer the same services a coffee shop does. With four hard-wired public access stations currently, this will offer greater access to a greater number of people.”

The State Library worked with DISC on the implementation and installation. The Library also determined a policy for use of the wireless Internet.

DISC worked to allow the user’s wireless personal computer to communicate with the State Library wireless network through access points installed in the library via radio signals.

Governor Sebelius said, “This is a great example of efficiency, use of modern technology, and a partnership of state agencies working together to provide better services for Kansans. This first authorized installation can be a starting point for more wireless initiatives statewide.”
