Governor says access to quality schools a must
Sebelius announces two appointments to the 2010 Commission

“Every child deserves access to quality schools,” said Governor Kathleen Sebelius. “And, we need independent leaders willing to step up to help ensure every child receives a great education. That’s why I’m proud to appoint Ray Daniels, Ph.D., and Brett Potts to the 2010 Commission.” Each will serve a four-year term.

“Education is the most essential asset our children can have for the future. We must ensure schools are accountable, tax dollars are going to help kids learn, and Kansas kids are going to great schools,” Governor Sebelius said. “I’m confident with Dr. Daniels’ and Brett’s experience, they make great additions to this board as it works to meet our children’s needs.”

Created earlier this year, the 2010 Commission conducts continuous and on-going monitoring of the implementation and operation of the school finance law and quality performance act, and other provisions of law relating to school finance and the quality performance accreditation system.

Dr. Daniels, Kansas City, spent seven years as superintendent of the Kansas City, Kansas, school district, retiring in August of 2005. He has worked with the school district since 1965, beginning as an English teacher. He served in multiple capacities including assistant principal of Wyandotte High School, director of personnel services, and assistant superintendent for personnel services for the district. Dr. Daniels is a 2005 inductee into the Mid-American Education Hall of Fame and was recognized by the Alliance of Community Educators in 2005. He was also named Kansas Superintendent of the Year for 2005 and the Kansas City Young Audiences Educator of the Year for 2005.

Potts, Overland Park, is currently in his first year as assistant principal at Blue Valley Northwest High School. He has been an educator for fifteen years, teaching students ranging from eighth grade to tenth grade. Potts was named the 2005 Kansas Teacher of the Year and most recently was a ninth grade biology teacher at Blue Valley Northwest. He has also been the assistant varsity football coach, head track coach and sophomore class sponsor.

The 2010 Commission is comprised of eleven appointed individuals. The Governor has two appointments, one of which must be licensed by the Kansas State Board of Education.
