16 September 2005 Governor orders review of state emergency plans With September being Kansas Preparedness Month, and in light of the recent destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, Governor Kathleen Sebelius on Friday ordered a review of Kansas’ emergency preparedness plans. “We’ve all watched the aftermath of Katrina with compassion and sympathy for the people who were unable to evacuate during the hurricane,” Governor Sebelius said. “We can learn a lesson from this disaster and make sure we’re ready to protect Kansans. The most vulnerable of our neighbors will need extra assistance in an emergency and we must be ready to provide it.” “We must be aggressive when it comes to preparing for an emergency,” the Governor continued. Governor Sebelius asked Adjutant General Tod Bunting to conduct a review of how well prepared state and local governments are to warn, alert, and evacuate Kansas citizens in the event of an emergency. Particular emphasis will be placed on helping those individuals who require additional or special assistance during an evacuation. These include the elderly, individuals without transportation, and Kansans in adult care facilities, schools and hospitals. “It is our job to protect Kansans and we will continue to improve our ability to protect every resident in the event of an emergency,” Governor Sebelius said. The Governor also called for a review of Kansas’ capability to shelter large groups of evacuees for either short- or long-term stays, with a primary focus on those with health issues or other needs. General Bunting will report back to Governor Sebelius as to whether there are any gaps in planning or shortfalls in resources so action can be taken to correct such deficiencies. |
