Governor: Communities are prepared for emergencies
Kansas communities receive federal aid to expand rural fire fighting programs

As September is Kansas Preparedness Month, Governor Kathleen Sebelius announced today four Kansas communities have continued their preparation for emergencies. The communities received nearly $375,000 in federal grants to put toward fire safety.

“Our state must be ready to respond to any emergency,” Governor Sebelius said. “Our first responders are on the front-line of any disaster or emergency that occurs. Like families needing to be prepared, our fire departments must be prepared with the essential services and equipment.”

These grants were part of the fourth round of the Fiscal Year 2005 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program and administered by the Department of Homeland Security. The grant program will issue approximately 5,500 awards worth $600 million in direct assistance to firefighters and first responders throughout the country, demonstrating Homeland Security’s commitment to ensuring that America’s firefighters have the resources they need to protect their communities.

Kansas communities received funding for both operations and firefighter safety and vehicle acquisition. Operations and safety funds will go toward training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, and modifications to fire stations and facilities. Vehicle acquisition monies can allow departments to purchase brush trucks, tankers, rescue, ambulances, aerials, foam units, and/or fireboats.

“The brave men and women protecting our communities need all the support we can give. These funds will go a long way to supporting their mission,” Governor Sebelius said.
