Domestic violence programs get $1 million
Governor announces grant funds to help victims and their families
TOPEKA, Kan. – – Governor Kathleen Sebelius today announced the Federal
Family Violence Prevention and Services Act grant awards for fiscal year 2006. The
22 domestic violence programs in Kansas receive these federal funds to provide immediate
shelter and related assistance for domestic violence victims and their dependents. Funds
also are used to develop prevention and awareness efforts addressing family violence. These
grant funds pay for the operation of shelter facilities, individual and group counseling,
advocacy and other services that assist families who are domestic violence victims.
“It is our duty to do everything possible to help protect domestic violence victims
and their children,” said Governor Sebelius, “These programs are designed
to assist victims as they move through the recovery process and also to help prevent family
violence in the first place.”
Kansas awarded a total of $1,087,915 to 22 programs. Funds are provided by the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families,
Office of Community Services.
