Governor Sebelius appoints three to Kansas Humanities Council

Governor Kathleen Sebelius today announced her appointment of Christie Brandau and Karen McCulloh to the Kansas Humanities Council, while Mike Kautsch was reappointed to the board. Each will serve a three-year term.

The Kansas Humanities Council is a private, non-profit cultural organization that promotes understanding of the history, traditions and ideas that shape our lives and build our communities.

“We are blessed with a rich history in our state,” Governor Sebelius said. “I am very supportive of efforts to preserve and promote that strong history, both today and for future generations, and have selected individuals who share that commitment.”

Brandau, Topeka, was appointed Kansas State Librarian in December of 2003. Previously, she was the state librarian in Michigan, and the assistant state librarian and interim state librarian in Iowa. In 2003, she received the President’s Award from the Michigan Association of Media Educators for her support and advocacy for school libraries.

Kautsch, Lawrence, is a professor of law at the University of Kansas School of Law. He formerly served as dean and faculty member of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. He was also director of the William Allen White Foundation at the University of Kansas. At the School of Law, Kautsch co-developed the Media, Law and Policy Program, including elective study leading to a certificate in Media, Law and Police.

McCulloh, Manhattan, is the assistant to the dean/development officer for Hale Library at Kansas State University. She has worked at Hale since 1990. McCulloh is former Manhattan mayor and Riley County Commissioner. She has also been the president of the Riley County Historical Society, KSU Social Club, City Park West Neighborhood Association, and Friends of Kansas Libraries. She currently serves as president of the Manhattan/Riley County League of Women Voters.
