3 June 2005 Governor Sebelius, Secretary Bremby Announce Youth Development Initiatives Director as part of vision for a healthy Kansas In keeping with Governor Kathleen Sebelius’ vision for a healthy Kansas, a position has been created within the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to identify, streamline and enhance youth development opportunities. Denise Everhart, who currently serves as Commissioner of the Juvenile Justice Authority, is resigning her position to take on the new responsibility, which is a perfect fit with her skills and experience. “Denise has spent her career focused on youth issues, as Juvenile Justice Commissioner, a Pro-Tem Judge, Guardian ad Litem (child’s guardian in court), a professor, and serving in the House of Representatives,” said Governor Sebelius. “I am so pleased Denise is willing to commit her talents where young Kansans will see the benefits of special attention and coordination.” Everhart said, “This opportunity comes at a great time for me, both personally and professionally. I look forward to taking on this important challenge that truly can make an impact on the young people across our state. As the mother of a teenager, I know first-hand how important this job is.” “We have worked to improve efforts within KDHE geared toward our youth,” said Secretary Rod Bremby. After carefully examining our team, we realized we needed someone who could bring all our efforts together, not only within KDHE, but across the Health and Human Services Sub-Cabinet Team. I am thrilled to have Denise on board in this capacity.” Everhart served as JJA Commissioner, beginning in January, 2003. She served as a Pro-Tem Judge for Shawnee County District Court, Division 10. In her private practice, Everhart focused on a full range of civil matters, including child in need of care, juvenile offender, and domestic. She has worked with the Koch Crime Commission and as an Assistant Adjunct Professor at Washburn Law School. Everhart served in the Kansas House of Representatives from 1988 – 1994. Everhart leaves JJA effective June 3 and will begin her new position with KDHE in July. Don Jordan, Osawatomie State Hospital Superintendent, will serve as Acting Commissioner of the Juvenile Justice Authority, beginning June 6, while a search is conducted for this position. |
