State, Governor honors soldiers at Memorial Day ceremony

In memoriam of all soldiers who have lost their lives while serving the nation in American wars, Governor Kathleen Sebelius laid a wreath at the Veterans’ Memorial during today’s Memorial Day ceremony. The ceremony was held this morning on the South Lawn of the Kansas Statehouse.

“Regardless of what passing issues may divide us as a people, we are always united as a nation in our resolve to honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to guarantee our freedoms,” Governor Sebelius said.

Joined by the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs, Governor Sebelius recognized the service of 20 Kansas soldiers and 52 Ft. Riley soldiers who have been killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Several family members whose loved ones have died in these conflicts took part in the event, laying roses at the memorial in honor of the fallen.

“Today, all across Kansas, we stand in solemn tribute to those who fought and sacrificed so others might live in freedom,” Governor Sebelius said. “As we honor them in our thoughts, we must also strive to honor them through our actions.”

As part of the continuing dedication to Kansans in uniform, the Kansas Military Bill of Rights was enacted this year to ensure the well-being of military families. From tuition waivers and tax credits, to death benefits for families, to hunting and fishing licenses without charge, these initiatives demonstrate the state’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of military personnel and their families.

Earlier this month, Governor Sebelius sent a letter to Kansans serving in the Kansas National Guard, who are currently deployed. On behalf of the State of Kansas, she thanked them for their service and sacrifice – not only theirs, but also their families.

“On this Memorial Day, we take this moment to remember our fallen comrades, to salute those of you now serving, for your selfless sacrifice, your professionalism, and your stalwart determination to protect our Nation and defeat those that would threaten America’s values. Your honor and devotion will once again allow America to prevail,” Governor Sebelius wrote.
