Governor Sebelius appoints three to Kansas Propane Education and Research Council

Governor Kathleen Sebelius has appointed Joseph Shriver, and reappointed James Brewer, Jr. and Don Sutton to the Kansas Propane Education and Research Council. Each will serve a three-year term.

The council develops programs to enhance consumer and employee safety and training, to improve existing propane technology, to increase efficiency and to educate the public about the environmental and safety aspects of propane.

“The individuals I’m appointing have extensive experience in the oil industry. They will be key in the council’s efforts to enhance the safety of Kansas residents who use propane,” Governor Sebelius said.

Shriver, Arkansas City, is a former petroleum marketer for Shriver Oil Company and Miller Oil Company. He has also served as a firefighter for the Arkansas City Fire Department. Shriver is a founding chairman of the Arkansas City Habitat for Humanity. He is a member of the Arkansas City Rotary Club, Arkansas City Chamber of Commerce and Leadership Arkansas City. While an adjunct instructor at Cowley County Community College, he developed a hazardous material training program. He is a former state representative.

James E. Brewer, Leon, is the owner and manager of Jim’s Propane Inc. He began working at the company in 1978 and has worked in various capacities including manager and driver. Brewer has also been a construction supervisor for Southern Kansas Telephone Company and owner and operator of Jim’s Ditching Service.

Sutton, Kansas City, is the owner of Tri State Tank. He has over twenty years of experience working with aircraft refueler trucks and propane. Sutton is a member of the National Propane Gas Association, Propane Marketers Association of Kansas and the Missouri Propane Gas Association.
