2 May 2005 Governor Sebelius appoints three to Athletic Commission Governor Kathleen Sebelius today announced three appointments to the Athletic Commission. The Commission oversees the licensing of organizers, participants and officials in professional boxing, sparring, wrestling, kickboxing, and full-contact karate contests. “It is essential ensure safe and fair competitions. The individuals I’m appointing will make great additions to the Athletic Commission,” Governor Sebelius said. Mark S. Balderston, D.C., Shawnee, is part of the medical team for Shawnee Mission North Athletics and Johnson County Community College. Balderston received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Cleveland Chiropractic College and has been licensed in Kansas for more than 20 years. Balderston has been president and vice-president for the Kansas Chiropractic Association and was named Doctor of the Year in 2002. In 1998, Balderston was on the medical team for the National Junior College Cross Country Championships and in 2002 he was inducted into Johnson County Community College Athletic Hall of Fame. Balderston will serve a three-year term. Ronald W. Holt, Wichita, is the director of culture, entertainment and recreation as part of the senior management team of Sedgwick County Government. Holt worked for Westar Energy in various management roles for more than 30 years. Holt graduated from Friends University with his a Bachelor of Science degree and from Wichita State University with his master’s degree in business administration. A member of various community organizations’ boards, Holt is on the executive committee for Wichita State University Alumni Council, has served as a chairman of the regional chapter of the American Red Cross and was chairman of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sedgwick County. Holt will serve a three-year term. Dan R. Pratt, Bonner Springs, is the director of athletics at Kansas City Kansas Community College. Pratt, who received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Tabor College, Hillsboro, and his Master of Science degree from Emporia, has worked in physical education for more than 20 years. Pratt has worked in K-12 and collegiate physical education programs, including at Henderson High School, Emporia State University, Dodge City Community College and Marymount College, in various positions instructing, coaching and managing athletes. Pratt will serve a four-year term. |
