Volunteer Kansas

The following is a column by Lieutenant Governor Mark Parkinson:

The Bible teaches us that, from those to whom much is given, much is expected.

Stacy and I have been blessed with an amazing family, a successful business, and the opportunity to improve our state by serving as lieutenant governor.

Because we have been given so much, we believe it’s important to give back. Whether it is through public service, volunteering at food banks, providing financial support to charities or simply donating blood, we want to make sure that we are positively impacting the lives of my fellow Kansans.

That’s why I’m launching a volunteerism initiative for our state – to encourage all citizens to give back to their communities, to their neighbors and to their fellow Kansans.

Kansas is already doing a stellar job in the area of service. In fact, we’re ranked fifth in total volunteerism out of all states – which is great – but we can still do better.

To build upon our already strong tradition of community service, I will be highlighting some of the excellent volunteering opportunities available to Kansans as I travel throughout the state in the coming months.

In addition, we are putting on our website, www.volunteerkansas.ks.gov, a listing of service opportunities throughout Kansas. This database will be searchable by the organization, the type of service, and the county in which the activity takes place, making it easier for Kansans to touch the lives of those around them.

And so, I challenge you to get involved: help build a house with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, sign up to be a mentor with Big Brothers and Big Sisters or donate your time to your community’s emergency shelter. Regardless of the amount of time you give, your efforts can and do make a difference.

Let’s work together to improve the welfare of our state, our fellow citizens, and our country. By serving our communities, we can and will do just that.
