Snyder: Help support Kansas children

The following column is by Coach Bill Snyder:

One of the most rewarding features of my 17 years coaching in the state of Kansas was the great support I received from fellow Kansans, and it’s this very same support I’m asking for today as I take on a new role.

During my 44 years working with young people, I observed the benefits they derive from the support, guidance, and learning provided by mentors. And studies show children who have mentors do better in school, are less likely to use drugs or alcohol, and have the confidence and positive attitude needed to become successful.

That’s why Governor Sebelius has asked me to lead Kansas Mentors, which is a cause very dear to me. You can learn more about our efforts at www.ksmentors.ks.gov.

The Governor and I believe all Kansas children deserve a caring adult role model in their lives—and Kansas Mentor’s mission is to make this a reality.

Unfortunately, the Kansas Legislature has left Kansas Mentors out of the state’s budget. But there is still time to correct this. Please contact your legislators and encourage them to support Kansas children by providing support for Kansas Mentors in the state budget. You can reach your state legislator at 800.432.3924 or find additional contact information at **www.kslegislature.org

We all understand that state resources are limited, but there is no investment more valuable than the one we make in the future of our children.

As a coach and a teacher, one of my responsibilities was to prepare players for the obstacles they would face on the field and in life. Our children also deserve a mentor to prepare them for the obstacles they will face in life.

I hope you’ll join me in asking our Legislature to help make our vision of a caring adult mentor for every Kansas child a reality. And I hope you’ll consider getting involved in the life of a child by becoming a mentor yourself.

Bill Snyder is the Chair of Kansas Mentors, and is former head coach of the Kansas State University football team.
