The Library

photo of the Cedar Crest Garden Room
The library (shown left) reflects many of Frank MacLennan's interests, particularly his love of the printed word. Hand-carved oak cabinet doors feature the trademarks of some of the first European printers and bookmakers. The hand-painted wood panels are bookplates or coats-of-arm of some of MacLennan's favorite authors. A quotation bordering the ceiling is from Shakespeare's "As You Like It."

MacLennan honored his family heritage by reproducing the family crest above the mantelpiece. An 1875 graduate of Kansas University, the fireplace is flanked by a painted Kansas Jayhawk and his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, crest. A photograph by Kansas artist, Gordon Parks, Fort Scott, rests on the mantle.

Just outside the library is a special display of the First Spouse's Tea Set. Created to honor Kansas' First Families by the Kansas Federation of Porcelain Artists, the set includes 43 cups and saucers for each former First Lady or Gentleman as well as a teapot, coffeepot, creamer, sugar bowl and large tray.
