former Lt. Governor John Moore

John Moore was elected Lt. Governor as the running mate of Governor Kathleen Sebelius on November 5, 2002 and assumed office on January 13, 2003.

John was the Secretary of Commerce until September 1, 2004 when he stepped aside to become the state’s first fulltime Lieutenant Governor.

Prior to being elected as Lt. Governor, John was employed by the Cessna Aircraft Company, which he joined in 1982 as Senior Vice President of Human Resources. In 1999, he was named one of two Executive Vice Presidents of the company. He retired from Cessna in July of 2002 in order to run for office.

While with Cessna, Moore was active in philanthropic and civic activities in the Wichita area. He is a founder and former President of the Kansas Foodbank Warehouse. He was also a founder and the first chairman of the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. He was the General Campaign Chairman for the United Way of the Plains in 1998. He also served as a board member and President of the Wichita Children’s Home.

John was born in Charleston, West Virginia and received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia in 1965. He received his juris doctorate degree from the University of Kentucky’s College of Law in 1968. In 1966, he married Marty Spangenberg (1944-2007). John currenlty lives in Wichita; he and his wife had two children, Clay Moore of Shawnee and Stacia Wohlford of Lawrence. John enjoys spending time with his five grandchildren.
