Gary Sherrer
Former Lieutenant Governor of the State of Kansas (1996
- 2003)
Gary Sherrer was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the State of Kansas by Governor
Bill Graves on July 18, 1996, and was elected to the office in 1998. Sherrer
is Kansas' 45th Lieutenant Governor, and is the longest serving Lieutenant Governor
in state history. Sherrer spent the majority of his career in the financial
industry, however; was also a public high school teacher. In addition to his
duties as Lieutenant Governor, Sherrer also served as the Secretary of the
Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing and as the Vice-Chair of the Governor's
Cabinet.
Sherrer served as the Chairman of the Governor's Vision 21st Century Task Force
and as chairman of the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors. He founded
the Leadership Kansas and Leadership
Wichita programs, and he taught a leadership
course at Emporia State University.
Sherrer is a native Kansan. He graduated from Topeka
High School and Emporia State
University. In 1965, he married Judy Waller of El
Dorado, Kansas. They make their
home in the Johnson County area and have two grown children.
