Governor Asks United Way of the Plains to Coordinate Green for Greensburg Fund (pdf)

"Your-Green-for-Greensburg Tornado Relief & Rebuilding Fund" will serve as a central collection point for anyone wishing to make a monetary contribution to help tornado victims in the Greensburg, Kansas, area.

A disaster such as this requires the services of many organizations—especially for on-going assistance in the future. United Way is setting up this fund to provide a vehicle for that help. Types of services supported could include: counseling; medical services; vouchers for rent or utility assistance; or other services.

  • The Green for Greensburg Fund will be administered by United Way of the Plains with no administration charge.
  • 100 percent of each gift will go to direct disaster recovery assistance.
  • Donors should make checks payable to “Green for Greensburg Fund”.

  • After the disaster relief is completed there will still be needs in Greensburg. The “Future Fund” will be the second wave of encouragement to the community of Greensburg.
  • Gifts can be designated to “education”, “healthcare” or “community rebuilding”.

How to apply for Federal disaster benefits

Individuals seeking Federal assistance must apply for the benefits either in person, by phone, or on-line 

  • In person at the Disaster Recovery Center in Havilland, KS.
  • By Phone: Call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Call TTY 1-800-462-7585 for people with speech or hearing disabilities.
  • Online at  http://www.fema.gov/assistance/index.shtm

State Unemployment Assistance is available

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed an executive order eliminating the waiting week for unemployment benefits for workers affected by the storm. The order eliminates the waiting week for unemployment benefits for workers affected by storms in Kiowa, Edwards, Pratt and Stafford counties. Applications for DUA in Kiowa County must be filed by June 5. Applications in Edwards, Pratt and Stafford Counties must be filed by June 12.

  • Onsite: Representatives from the Kansas Department of Labor are on site at least through May 18 to take applications in the Disaster Recovery Center in Haviland, KS.
